St. Patrick's Day Pasta Necklace

This St. Patrick's Day pasta necklace craft is a great wearable craft kids to make. The dyed pasta used in this craft (that we describe how to make) is a fun, new material for kids to use. We did this craft with our 2 year old daughter, and in doing so we realized we would need to adapt it a bit to meet her abilities. So we've included here a method for older children as well as younger children to make it suitable for both age groups. This is a fantastic kids craft for St. Patrick's day that you can use to teach lessons in creating patterns as well as improving the fine motor skills of younger children. Our daughter had a blast making this necklace (we made at least 5 of them!) and we hope your children will too!

What you'll need:

  • Green and yellow dyed pasta: we used rigatoni and fiori pasta. *Here are the instructions on how to make dyed pasta.
  • Yarn
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Toothpick (optional)
  • shamrock template and glue (optional)

How to make your St. Patrick's Day Pasta Necklace Craft

Method for older children

  • Cut the length of string that you would like your necklace to be - it's best to cut this slightly longer than you will need.
  • String the yarn through the pasta to create your necklace.
  • If you would like to include a shamrock on your neckace, print our template and cut it out. Trace onto green craft foam and cut out the pieces. You will need two shamrocks. Glue the pieces around the string on your necklace.
  • Tie the ends of your necklace together and trim any excess.

Method for younger children (see photos at right)

  • Cut the length of string that you would like your necklace to be - it's best to cut this slightly longer than you will need.
  • Tape one end of the string to a table or book (we used a wipes container because it was handy!).
  • Tape a toothpick to the other end of the yarn to create a stiff end or "needle" for the children to use to string through the pasta.
