Decorate your next dinner party with this craft that children of all ages can create. Starting with a glass jar, tissue paper, and markers, children will let their imaginations run wild as they cut out unique shapes and design funky patterns. Once complete, light a candle and watch the magic begin!

What you'll need:

  • 1 quart or larger clear, clean glass jar
  • 1 piece of black construction paper (8 1/2 inches x 11 inches)
  • white tissue paper (8 1/2 inches x 11 inches)
  • markers
  • scotch tape
  • scissors
  • small candle
How to make your glow lantern craft:
  1. Wrap the black construction paper and white tissue paper around the glass jar. Cut off excess paper so that it fits completely around the jar. (see photos)
  2. Take the black construction paper and fold accordion-style. (see photos)
  3. With adult supervision, use the scissors to cut out many small shapes along both sides of the black folded up construction paper. (see photos)
  4. Unfold paper and flatten completely. Using rolls of tape, secure the tissue paper to the flattened piece of construction paper. (see photos)
  5. Using the markers, gently color the tissue paper spaces that show through the construction paper. (see photos)
  6. Wrap the construction paper around the glass jar and secure with scotch tape. (see photos)
  7. Place a light candle inside and watch your lantern come alive!
