Let's get ready to jumble! The Alphabet Jumble is an imaginative game that allows young children to practice letter and sound recognition. Combining creativity with education, children will search for stickers, magazine cutouts, or photographed objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt and written the letters of the alphabet on clothespins, they will be ready to begin the Alphabet Jumble!

What you'll need:

  • 26 clothespins
  • 1 large Ziploc bag
  • Black fine-tipped marker
  • Magazines (optional)
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Camera (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Glue
How to make your alphabet jumble game:
  1. Using the black marker, write the letter "A," in capital letters, on one side of a clothespin, and in lower case letters on the other side of the clothespin. (see photos)
  2. Repeat this step with each letter of the alphabet. (see photos)
  3. Find an object that begins with the letter "A" in a magazine, around your house, or on a sticker sheet. If the object is in a magazine, cut it out, and glue it to a piece of cardstock. If the object is a sticker, place it on a piece of cardstock, and cut out. If it is a photographed object, develop the picture, glue it to a piece of cardstock, and cut it out. Turn the cardstock over and write the corresponding letter on the back of the cardstock. For example, for the sticker airplane, you would write an "A" on the back of the cardstock. (see photos)
  4. Repeat this step for each letter of the alphabet. If desired, you may find more than one object for each letter of the alphabet. (see photos)
  5. Once you have found at least one object for each letter of the alphabet, gather up the objects and place them in the Ziploc bag. Have your child shake the bag up, reach in, and pull out one of the objects. Ask your child what letter the object begins with and what sound that letter makes. Have your child find the corresponding clothespin and clip the object to the clothespin. Set the clothespin aside and grab another object from the Ziploc bag. Repeat until no objects remain in the Ziploc bag. Continue playing the game until your child can correctly match all of the objects to the letters of the alphabet. You can reuse this game by finding new objects!
