Stars and Stripes Tic-Tac-Toe

With the extra long weekend and vacations planned, there are sure to be some times when parents are looking to keep children entertained. This whimsical craft is sure to be a hit as children of all ages create a spin-off of the classic tic-tac-toe game. The fun does not stop when the craft is over, but instead, continues when children challenges friends, family, and neighbors to "tic-tac-toe� three in a row."

What you'll need:

  • 1 piece blue foam (8 1/2" x 11")
  • large yellow foam star
  • Foam letters that spell USA (optional)
  • white ribbon
  • 1 piece white and red cardstock
  • star template
  • glue
  • scissors
  • 1 Ziploc bag
  • black, blue, and red markers
  • 1 white label
How to make your Stars and Stripes Tic-Tac-Toe game:
  • Using the scissors, cut two pieces of ribbon that are 11 inches long. Cut two pieces of white ribbon that are 8 1/2 inches long. Take the two 11 inch ribbons and glue them onto the blue foam, creating three equal sections. Repeat with the two 8 1/2 inch pieces. (see photo)
  • If desired, glue foam "USA" letters on yellow star. If you are not using foam letters, with the black marker, write "U.S.A" on the yellow star. Using the red and blue markers, write "Stars and Stripes Tic-Tac-Toe" on the label. Stick the label on the yellow foam star, underneath the foam or written U.S.A. (see photo)
  • Glue the yellow star in the upper, left-hand corner of the foam board.
  • Using the black marker, trace the star template on the white cardstock. With adult supervision, cut out the white stars. Place them in the Ziploc bag so that they do not get lost.
  • With adult supervision, cut a strip of paper off of the red cardstock. Cut five small lines from the strip to form the red stripes. Place these stripes in the Ziploc bag for storage. (see photo)
  • Your Stars and Stripes Tic-Tac-Toe board is now complete! Ask a friend to play a few rounds with you, or challenge an adult to beat you. Remember to take turns going first!
