Our two year old became infatuated with her older sister's piggy bank and coins. In looking for a toddler safe alternative for her to play with, this piggy bank craft was created. This became a counting craft as well as she loved to count the "coins" as she put them into her bank. She also loved that she could dump them out all on her own. This cute piggy bank craft was fun to make with her and became a fun learning tool for number recognition ("can you find the number 5 coin for the piggy?"), counting and fine motor work. This piggy bank craft was so much fun we had to make a second one for her older sister to play with too! **The juice lids we used were large enough that they do not pose a choking hazard, but as always, children should be supervised at all times around homemade "toys".

What you'll need:

  • Clean snack container with lid (we used a Gerber Crunchies can)
  • Pink Construction paper
  • Pink craft foam
  • Pink pipe cleaner
  • Marker (a sharpie or similar is needed to write on the juice lids)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Lids from drink bottles (we used motts for tots apple juice lids which were conviently yellow)
  • Knife for ADULT USE ONLY
How to make your piggy bank craft:
  1. Number the drink bottle lids from 1-10, or however you would like to match your child's skill set. For our older child we used real denominations so she could practice her money skills.
  2. Wrap the pink construction paper around the canister and tape in place.
  3. Lay the canister on its side. Use a knife to cut a slit in the top of the canister large enough for the coins to fit in. This should only be done by an adult.
  4. Use tape to secure the edges of the newly cut slit to the can (otherwise tiny hands could rip the paper off the pig).
  5. Cut two thin strips of craft foam and tape or glue them to the opposite side of the canister than the slit made in step three. These will stabilize the pig and will keep him from rolling away.
  6. Cut two circles of pink construction paper and cover the lid and the bottom of the canister.
  7. Twist a pink pipe cleaner around a marker and tape the tail to the removable lid of the canister.
  8. Cut an oval piece of craft foam to serve as the pigs nose. Add two black circles with a marker and glue it to the bottom of the can. Add (or draw on) eyes to the can and a smile.
  9. Cut two ears out of craft foam and tape or glue them to the head of the pig.
