A turtle isn't necessarily a natural choice for a sun catcher craft, but the end result is fantastic! We were trying to find a craft that would allow us to make a pattern on the turtle's shell while appealing to both of our daughters (ages 2 and 6). Using the different shades of green tissue paper made this cute turtle craft a success. This sun catcher turtle craft is a great animal craft or pond life craft as well, and is easy enough for even the youngest of children to help make.

What you'll need:

  • Sun Catcher Turtle Template
  • Green and red construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Marker or crayon
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Green tissue paper (in different shades if possible: craft stores sell tissue paper in bulk packages of many colors that come in handy for crafts and wrapping!)
  • Contact paper (cheapest if bought at home store, like Home Depot)
How to make your sun catcher turtle craft:
  1. Print our sun catcher turtle template and cut out the turtle shape.
  2. Copy the turtle onto green construction paper and cut it out.
  3. Carefully cut out the middle part of the shell (only the shell - leave the head alone!) leaving about a quarter inch strip on the outside.
  4. Draw toes on the turtle's feet.
  5. Cut a piece of contact paper big enough to cover the turtle. Peel the backing off and stick the contact paper sheet over the front of the turtle (the side where you just drew the toes).
  6. Cut the excess contact paper around the turtle off - it will still cover his head, toes, tail, etc., but you don't want to much overhang to stick to the kids.
  7. Cut green tissue paper into squares (approximately 1"x1").
  8. Stick the tissue paper onto the contact paper. The effect is best if the pieces overlap, but it's not necessary. If some pieces stick out over the edge of the shell it's ok!
  9. Take a second piece of contact paper and place it over the back of the turtle (where you just added the tissue paper).
  10. Trim off the excess contact paper as well as the tissue paper that is sticking outside of the shell.
  11. Cut out a mouth from red construction paper and glue the mouth and the googly eyes to the front of the turtle to make a face.
