Snow Globe Ornament Craft

We saw an ornament with "snow in the middle" in the window of a department store this season and fell in love with the idea. This snow globe ornament craft is our version and it turned out to be such a beautiful handmade Christmas craft that we are planning on giving one to grandparents and friends. We used clear plastic ornaments available at any craft store, white paint, a little glitter glue, and some white craft sand to put these together. Our daughter loved painting the larger snowmen with her fingers and even made some thumbprint snowmen too. This is a kids Christmas craft that will be cherished year after year as we decorate the tree.

What you'll need:

  • Clear plastic Christmas ornaments (these are easier to find early in December at craft stores)
  • White paint (we used "snow paint" because it looked like fun to try)
  • Glitter glue
  • Sharpie markers (black and orange)
  • White craft sand
  • Small funnel
  • Ribbon
  • Paper towel roll
  • Hot glue gun - optional
How to make your snow globe ornament:
  • Use the white paint to make snowmen figures on the ornaments. You can either use two thumbprints stacked on top of each other or just paint on two circles.
  • Use the glitter glue to add on dots of snow or make asterisk patterns to make snow flakes all around the ornament. You can also add the year as well.
  • Set aside so the paint can dry. We found that cutting a paper towel roll into rings made excellent little stands for our ornaments.
  • Once the paint is dry, use the markers to add on eyes, buttons, a nose and mouth, arms and a hat or bows.
  • Use the funnel to fill the ornaments with some white craft snow. You need to do this slowly and test the weight every now and then because sand gets heavy very quickly and if you go too far the hanger lid won't be able to stay on the ornament and then it falls off and there is sand everywhere...trust us when we say this is not fun!
  • We recommend gluing the hanger lid of the ornament onto the ball to prevent the above occurence from happening.
  • Add ribbon and hang on the tree!
